Travel eSIM Hotspot Not Working? Fix Tethering on iPhone and Android

Laptop beside a phone with an eSIM hotspot not working message

For an eSIM hotspot not working problem, first turn Wi-Fi off on the host phone and prove that the travel eSIM itself can load a webpage. Then confirm the plan permits tethering and has hotspot data remaining. Make Travel the mobile-data line, restart both devices, reset the hotspot password and try a 2.4 GHz compatibility band. If the phone itself has no data, fix that connection before troubleshooting hotspot.

Identify which of three links is failing

  1. Mobile link: the host phone connects to the travel eSIM's network.
  2. Hotspot link: the host broadcasts a private Wi-Fi network.
  3. Client link: the laptop, tablet or companion phone joins that network and routes data.

A client can show “connected” while the host has no usable mobile data. Conversely, the host can browse normally while a password, Wi-Fi band or client setting prevents sharing. Diagnose in that order.

Before testing, plug in the host if practical and place both devices nearby. Weak client Wi-Fi and weak cellular signal can otherwise overlap and hide which link is failing.

Fix sequence for eSIM hotspot not working

  1. On the host phone, turn Wi-Fi off and test one webpage over Travel data.
  2. Check that Travel is selected for mobile data and automatic switching is off.
  3. Open the live plan terms and confirm hotspot or tethering is allowed.
  4. Check remaining plan data and any separate tethering allowance.
  5. Turn hotspot off, restart the host and client, then turn hotspot on.
  6. Give the hotspot a simple new name and strong password.
  7. On the client, forget the old network and reconnect.
  8. Use 2.4 GHz or “Maximise Compatibility” if the client cannot see or hold 5 GHz.
  9. Disconnect other clients and test one device.
  10. Install current software updates when trusted Wi-Fi is available.

Test after each change. Avoid a network reset until reversible settings are checked, because resets can remove saved Wi-Fi and other preferences.

iPhone checks

Open Settings and Personal Hotspot, then enable Allow Others to Join. Keep that screen open during the first connection and confirm the displayed password. If Personal Hotspot is absent even though cellular data works, Apple says to contact the carrier about adding hotspot support to the plan.

On supported models, enable Maximise Compatibility if an older client cannot discover or stay connected to the hotspot. This favours compatibility but may reduce Wi-Fi performance. Also check that the correct cellular line supplies data.

Android and Samsung checks

On many Android phones, open Settings, Network & internet, then Hotspot & tethering. On Galaxy, use Settings, Connections, Mobile Hotspot and Tethering. Exact menus vary.

Check network name, password, security, band and automatic timeout. Samsung recommends 2.4 GHz for broader compatibility and notes that a connected device can lack internet when the tethering allowance is exhausted. Google also warns that carriers can limit tethering, so confirm the plan rather than assuming the switch guarantees service.

Use the symptom to choose a fix

Symptom Likely area Check
Hotspot menu missing Carrier or plan provisioning Ask provider about tethering support
Client cannot see hotspot Band, hidden network or timeout Use 2.4 GHz and visible name
Password rejected Saved credential mismatch Change password and forget network
Connected, no internet Host data, allowance or routing Test host alone and check plan
Phone fast, client slow Wi-Fi link or multiple clients Test one nearby client
Connection drops when screen locks Timeout or power saving Review hotspot and battery settings

Do not confuse speed with hotspot failure

A hotspot divides the host connection among clients and adds a Wi-Fi hop. If both phone and laptop are slow, investigate mobile signal, congestion, network mode and plan limits with Why Your eSIM Is Slow: 5G, LTE, Congestion, Routing, and Throttling. If the phone is fast but only the laptop is slow, focus on band, range, VPN and client updates.

A travel provider's IP may also appear in another country, which can affect content or latency without disabling hotspot; see Why Your Travel eSIM Shows an IP Address From Another Country. Do not change APNs randomly to correct an IP-location label.

Manage battery, heat and data

Hotspot use keeps both cellular and Wi-Fi radios active, consumes data and can add heat. Keep the phone ventilated, charged with an appropriate adapter and out of direct sun. Disconnect clients when finished and use the battery steps in Is Your Travel eSIM Draining the Battery? Likely Causes and Fixes if drain is severe.

Pause cloud sync and system updates on connected devices when allowance matters. A laptop can consume data in the background much faster than a phone used for maps and messaging.

Mark the hotspot network as metered on a laptop when the operating system offers that option. This can reduce automatic background transfers, but it does not replace checking usage with the provider.

When to contact support

Ask the eSIM provider whether the plan permits hotspot, whether a separate tethering allowance is exhausted and whether APN provisioning is required. Send the phone model, operating system, destination and evidence that host data works. Do not delete the eSIM.

When tethering is essential, compare current eSIM Vibes plans and verify live hotspot terms before purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Can a data-only eSIM use hotspot?

It can when the provider plan and device permit tethering. Data-only does not automatically mean hotspot is included.

Why is the laptop connected but offline?

The host may lack mobile data, the tethering allowance may be exhausted or routing may have stalled. Test the phone alone first.

Should I change the APN for hotspot?

Only when the provider supplies exact hotspot or APN instructions. Random changes can break all mobile data.
