How to keep phone number with travel eSIM
- Check dual-SIM support and unlock status. Your exact model, purchase region, operating system and carriers determine which SIM combinations work. A carrier-locked phone may reject a second provider.
- Install and label the travel eSIM. Name the profiles Home and Travel so you do not edit the wrong line.
- Select Travel for mobile data. Turn off automatic cellular-data switching. That keeps the home line from silently taking over when the travel connection is weak.
- Set roaming separately. Follow the travel provider's direction for the travel eSIM. Keep data roaming off on Home unless your home plan explicitly covers the destination.

A data-only eSIM can support internet calling and messaging apps, but it may not provide an ordinary phone number. Your native dialler and carrier SMS still use whichever voice line the phone selects. If that is Home, its roaming conditions apply even though Travel is the mobile-data line.
Receiving an SMS is sometimes treated differently from sending one, and voicemail can create costs in ways travellers do not expect. There is no safe universal pricing rule. Check the home carrier's current destination page and ask specifically about:

WhatsApp, iMessage and FaceTime
Changing the phone's data line does not automatically change the number registered to a messaging account. What happens after the trip
Back home, select Home for mobile data, restore your preferred switching setting and disable the travel line. Keeping an expired profile stored and deleting it are different actions.
