To install travel eSIM on iPhone, connect a compatible, unlocked iPhone to reliable internet, open Settings and Cellular or Mobile Data, choose Add eSIM, then use the method supplied by the provider: QR code, activation link, carrier app, or manual details. After the profile is added, give the line a clear label and choose which line handles mobile data. Do not turn on the travel plan early until you know what starts its validity. At the destination, select it for data and enable roaming only on the line the provider instructs.
Before you install travel eSIM on iPhone
- Confirm the exact iPhone model and sales region support eSIM.
- Check Settings, General, About, Carrier Lock for No SIM Restrictions if the plan is from another provider.
- Update to the latest iOS version the device supports.
- Connect to dependable Wi-Fi or a hotspot.
- Read the plan's activation and validity rule.
- Keep the QR code, link, or manual activation details private.
Apple's current eSIM setup guide lists supported devices, regional exceptions, and available setup methods. If timing is unclear, read when to install a travel eSIM before scanning anything.
Method 1: install with a QR code
If the provider gives you a QR code, display it on a second device or printed page. Then:
- Open Settings.
- Select Cellular or Mobile Data.
- Select Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan.
- Choose Use QR Code.
- Scan the provider's code.
- Enter a confirmation code only if the provider supplied one.
- Review the plan and select Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan.
Apple also supports scanning a carrier QR code with the Camera app. On supported recent iOS versions, a QR code shown in a default email app or browser may offer an Add eSIM action after a press and hold. Use only the method shown by Apple and your provider; do not upload the QR code to a public scanner.
Method 2: use an activation link or app
A provider may send a supported activation link. Open it on the iPhone, review the iOS prompt, allow the new eSIM, and continue through setup. A provider app may also hand the activation securely to iOS.
Before accepting a link:
- confirm the message was expected;
- check the sender and domain;
- open the provider's official account or app independently if uncertain; and
- never enter Apple Account or payment credentials into an unexpected page.
The exact screen sequence depends on iOS and provider support. If the link opens only a web page without an iOS activation prompt, return to the official installation instructions.
Method 3: enter the details manually
Manual setup is useful when the QR code is on the same screen or cannot be scanned. In the Add eSIM flow, choose the QR-code option and then Enter Details Manually, or the equivalent label. Enter the SM-DP+ address, activation code, and confirmation code exactly as supplied.
Do not guess punctuation, spaces, or letter case. If the manual fields are missing, confirm that the device is supported and that you followed the current provider instructions.
Label and configure the two lines
After installation, use a clear label such as “Travel” or the destination. iPhone may ask which line should be the default for calls and messages and which should supply cellular data. For a plan installed before departure, keeping the home line as the data line until arrival can prevent unintended activation, subject to the plan rules.
At the destination, the usual data-focused configuration is:
- open Settings and Cellular or Mobile Data;
- switch on the travel line;
- select Cellular Data and choose the travel eSIM;
- turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching if fallback to the home line would incur charges;
- open the travel line and enable Data Roaming if the provider requires it; and
- keep data roaming off on the home line unless its plan covers use.
Apple's dual-SIM guide explains how iPhone assigns data, calls, messages, iMessage, and FaceTime. For a full decision map, see dual-SIM travel setup.
Test the connection after landing
Turn Wi-Fi off briefly and load a simple HTTPS webpage. If it works, confirm the phone shows the intended travel line as the data source. Then check the provider's balance or status through its official account.
If there is no connection:
- confirm you are in a listed destination;
- check that the travel line is on and selected for data;
- apply the required data-roaming and APN instructions;
- toggle airplane mode on and off;
- restart the iPhone;
- check for a carrier-settings update under Settings, General, About; and
- record the exact error before contacting support.
Apple's setup troubleshooting page recommends checking the line, airplane mode, restart, software, and carrier settings. Do not delete the eSIM as a routine fix. The QR code may be single-use, and Apple advises contacting the provider if setup still fails.
Protect the home line from roaming data
Installing a second line does not automatically disable the first. Review both line labels after every major settings change or restart. A status icon alone does not tell you which tariff is paying for an app's data.
If you also use a Samsung phone, follow the separate Samsung travel eSIM installation guide; the menu structure is different.
Choose the route first: browse eSim Vibe destination plans, then follow the installation details attached to the exact live product.
Frequently asked questions
Can I scan an eSIM QR code shown on the same iPhone?
On supported iOS versions, a press-and-hold action in a supported email app or browser may offer Add eSIM. Otherwise use the provider's link, app, manual details, or show the code on another screen.
Why does the eSIM say “Activating” before I travel?
A destination plan may be unable to register until it reaches a supported network. Confirm that the profile appears, switch it off if the instructions permit, and ask the provider if the status or validity is unclear.
Should I delete and scan again if setup fails?
No. First use Apple's non-destructive checks and contact the provider. Deleting can make a single-use QR code impossible to reinstall.
